What else to bring — and how to keep a dog safe up high
- Water, and lots of it. Don’t count on streams — many are dry by late summer, and some carry giardia. Pack your dog’s water with your own.
- Altitude affects dogs too. A dog from low elevation can tire fast and even get altitude sick. Ease into big days, watch for heavy panting or lethargy, and turn around if something’s off.
- Watch the paws. Check between the toes for cuts, foxtails, and ice balls; hot midday rock can burn pads in summer.
- Wildlife & leash rules. Moose are the real danger in Colorado and react badly to dogs — keep yours leashed and close. Many areas require leashes, and some (Wilderness areas vary; national parks like RMNP largely ban dogs on trails) have strict rules. Does my dog really need a hiking pack?
Not for short, easy hikes — but on longer trails a pack lets a healthy adult dog carry its own water and snacks, which lightens your load. Start with an empty or lightly loaded pack and keep the weight under roughly 10–15% of your dog’s body weight.
Do dogs need boots for hiking in Colorado?
Often, yes. Sharp granite and talus, hot summer rock, and snow-and-ice can cut or burn paws. Boots take practice — size up from your measurement and break them in at home — but they save a lot of trips. Ruffwear’s are the trail-tough standard; budget boots work for occasional use.
