Colorado Scenic Drives: The Best Byways & Mountain Passes

A guide to Colorado's best scenic drives — the Million Dollar Highway and San Juan Skyway, Trail Ridge Road, Mount Blue Sky, Independence Pass, and the top fall-color byways, plus when they're open.

The short version: In Colorado, the drive is the destination. The white-knuckle Million Dollar Highway, the sky-high Trail Ridge Road, and a dozen more passes deliver some of the best scenery in America from behind the wheel. Here are the drives worth planning a trip around — plus when they’re open and where they lead. Pair them with our road-trip itineraries.

Most of these are seasonal — high passes close under snow, usually roughly Memorial Day to mid-October — and all demand a little care at altitude. Here are the classics.

San Juan Skyway & the Million Dollar Highway

Colorado’s most jaw-dropping drive. The 236-mile San Juan Skyway loops through the state’s most rugged peaks, and its crown jewel — the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton — clings to cliff edges with no guardrails. Continue to Telluride and Durango for a full loop. Not for nervous passengers, but unforgettable.

Trail Ridge Road

The highest continuous paved road in any U.S. national park, cresting above 12,000 feet through Rocky Mountain National Park between Estes Park and Grand Lake. Alpine tundra, marmots, and endless views. Typically open Memorial Day through mid-October.

Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway

The highest paved road in North America, climbing past 14,000 feet near Idaho Springs (timed reservations required in season). A short, steep, spectacular detour from I-70.

Independence Pass

A dramatic, narrow climb over the Continental Divide between Twin Lakes and Aspen, topping out above 12,000 feet. Closed in winter; a summer highlight with alpine lakes and big drop-offs.

Fall-color drives

For peak aspen gold, few drives beat Kebler Pass near Crested Butte (one of the largest aspen groves on Earth), Guanella Pass above Georgetown, and the Peak to Peak Highway through the foothills. Time them for late September.

Near Summit County

Close to home, the Top of the Rockies Byway links Leadville, Twin Lakes, and Copper Mountain past Colorado’s highest peaks, and Boreas Pass above Breckenridge is a gentle dirt-road classic.

Driving these roads safely

High passes are steep, narrow, and weather-dependent. Check current status and closures before you go, watch for afternoon storms and early snow, use low gears on long descents, and don’t rush. In winter, most of these are closed — see our getting around Colorado guide for the traction law and mountain-driving tips.

Colorado scenic drives FAQ

What is the most scenic drive in Colorado?

The San Juan Skyway, and especially the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton, is widely considered Colorado's most spectacular drive, with cliff-hugging switchbacks through the rugged San Juan Mountains. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is the most famous high-alpine drive.

When are Colorado mountain passes open?

Most high scenic passes are open roughly from late May (Memorial Day) through mid-October, then close for winter under snow. Exact dates vary each year with the weather, so always check current road status before planning a drive.

Is the Million Dollar Highway dangerous?

It is safe if you drive carefully, but the section between Ouray and Silverton is narrow, has steep drop-offs, and largely lacks guardrails, so it can be nerve-wracking for passengers afraid of heights. Drive slowly, avoid it in bad weather, and let faster traffic pass.
