For Boulder and north-Denver skiers, Eldora is the answer to “I want to ski today without sitting on I-70.” It’s not the biggest mountain in Colorado, but its proximity, its no-drama access, and its genuine local character make it a Front Range institution — and a great place to learn.
| Pass | Ikon Pass |
|---|---|
| From Boulder / Denver | ~21 mi from Boulder / ~50 mi from Denver — via US-36 & Nederland, NOT I-70 |
| Base elevation | ~9,200 ft |
| Skiable terrain | ~680 acres, plus a full Nordic center |
| Known for | Closest ski area to Boulder, avoiding I-70, cross-country trails |
| Best for | Front Range day trips, learning, Nordic skiing |
The mountain
Eldora is compact but more varied than its size suggests: a broad beginner and intermediate front side with excellent learning terrain and ski school, plus steeper runs and glades off the Corona and West Ridge areas for stronger skiers, and terrain parks for freestyle. It’s exposed up high, so wind can affect the upper lifts on stormy days — a quick weather check pays off.
The Nordic center
Eldora runs one of the best cross-country and snowshoe networks near the Front Range, with groomed trails winding through the forest. If you like Nordic skiing or want to try snowshoeing, it’s a real draw alongside the downhill area.
The I-70-free advantage
Eldora’s superpower is its access: you reach it from Boulder up scenic Boulder Canyon through the mountain town of Nederland — no Eisenhower Tunnel, no I-70 gridlock. For anyone based in Boulder or north Denver, that can save hours on a weekend versus driving to the I-70 resorts.
Lift tickets & passes
Eldora is on the Ikon Pass, and it sells its own day tickets too — a convenient Front Range option whether or not you hold an Ikon. If you’ll ski more than a few days, a season pass almost always beats day-of window tickets. Our Epic vs. Ikon guide covers which mountains each pass includes and when to buy. Direct lift-ticket and pass links are coming as we finalize our booking partners.
Where to stay in the Eldora / Nederland area
the Eldora / Nederland area and the surrounding valley have lodging across the range, from slopeside condos to budget rooms down the road. Direct “check availability” booking links for the Eldora / Nederland area are coming as we finalize our booking partner. For how we think about choosing a base for a Colorado trip, see our where to stay guide.
Getting there
From Boulder, take Boulder Canyon (CO-119) up to Nederland, then follow the signs to Eldora — about 21 miles and 45 minutes, entirely off I-70. From Denver it’s roughly an hour via US-36 to Boulder and up the canyon. Mountain-canyon driving still demands winter tires and caution in a storm.
Gear & what to pack
Deep cold, thin dry air, and intense sun on snow make layering and eye protection matter here. Start with our base layers, ski gloves, and goggles guides, then run through the full Colorado ski packing list — and read up on altitude sickness before you arrive.
Eldora FAQ

It’s the closest to Boulder, about 21 miles, and one of the closest to Denver — and crucially you reach it via Boulder Canyon and Nederland, avoiding I-70 entirely.

Yes — it has extensive beginner and intermediate terrain, a strong ski school, and a manageable, low-key footprint, which makes it a popular place to learn on the Front Range.
Does Eldora get windy?
It can — the upper mountain is exposed, so wind sometimes affects the higher lifts during storms. Check the forecast, and know the front side and trees stay more sheltered.
