If Vail is the big, buzzing headliner, Beaver Creek is the refined retreat next door. Purpose-built and unabashedly upscale, it trades Vail’s scale and energy for immaculate grooming, shorter lift lines, and one of the best family experiences in Colorado skiing. It shares the Vail valley and the Epic Pass, so many visitors ski both on one trip.

The mountain

Beaver Creek skis bigger than its acreage suggests, spread across three connected pods. The Haymeadow and base areas hold excellent beginner and family terrain with top ski schools; the middle mountain is a groomer’s paradise of long, immaculate blues. For experts, Grouse Mountain and the Birds of Prey downhill — a World Cup racecourse — deliver genuinely steep, challenging runs. The result is a mountain that quietly satisfies every level while feeling calmer than its famous neighbor.

The village

Beaver Creek Village is a compact, pedestrian, ski-in/ski-out enclave with heated walkways, outdoor escalators up to the lifts, and a ring of high-end lodges, restaurants, and shops. It leans luxury — but the famous free chocolate-chip cookies handed out at the base at 3 p.m. are for everyone. Down-valley Avon and Edwards offer more approachable lodging and dining.

Lift tickets & passes

Beaver Creek is on the Epic Pass, which also covers neighboring Vail, plus Breckenridge and Keystone. If you’ll ski more than a few days, a season pass almost always beats day-of window tickets. Our Epic vs. Ikon guide covers which mountains each pass includes and when to buy. Direct lift-ticket and pass links are coming as we finalize our booking partners.

Getting there

Take I-70 to Exit 167 at Avon, then up the access road to the village — about two hours from Denver in good conditions. The Eagle County Airport (EGE) is only about 20 minutes west, making Beaver Creek one of the easier Colorado resorts to reach by air. Watch I-70 ski traffic on weekends.

Gear & what to pack

Deep cold, thin dry air, and intense sun on snow make layering and eye protection matter here. Start with our base layers, ski gloves, and goggles guides, then run through the full Colorado ski packing list — and read up on altitude sickness before you arrive.
