How to choose a hydration bladder
- Capacity: 2L vs 3L. A 2L covers short hikes; go 3L for long days, summit pushes, and hot or high-altitude outings where you drink more than you expect. You don’t have to fill it all the way.
- Easy cleaning is everything. Mildew is the enemy of bladders. A wide or zip-top opening lets you wash and fully dry the inside — the single biggest quality-of-life feature. Store it in the freezer between trips to stay fresh.
- Bite valve & shutoff. A high-flow valve delivers more water per sip; an on/off lever prevents leaks in your pack. A quick-disconnect tube makes refills far easier.
- Winter tip: beat the freeze. On cold days the tube freezes first — after each sip, blow the water back down into the reservoir, route the tube inside your jacket, or use an insulated tube cover.

What size hydration bladder should I get, 2L or 3L?
For most Colorado day hikes, 3L is the safe choice — the dry, high-altitude air dehydrates you faster than you expect, and you can always under-fill it. A 2L is fine for short, cool outings. On long summit days or in summer heat, more capacity is better.
Hydration bladder or water bottles — which is better?
A bladder lets you sip hands-free without stopping, so you tend to drink more, and it carries more water low in your pack. Bottles are easier to clean, monitor, and refill from a filter. How do I keep my hydration tube from freezing in winter?
After each sip, blow the water in the tube back down into the reservoir so nothing sits in the line to freeze. Routing the tube inside your jacket and adding an insulated tube cover also help. On very cold days, an insulated bottle can be more reliable.
How do I clean a hydration bladder?
Rinse after each use and dry it completely — mildew grows in a damp, sealed bladder. A wide or zip-top opening makes this far easier, and a brush kit helps with the tube. Storing it in the freezer between trips keeps it fresh.
