Colorado’s fifty-eight 14,000-foot peaks are astonishingly accessible, but the margin for a bad packing list is thinner up there than anywhere else in the state. This is the kit we actually carry above 14,000 feet, why each piece matters more on a 14er than on a normal trail, and the honest word on what you can skip.

What a 14er demands that a normal hike doesn’t
Three things separate a 14er from a regular Summit County trail, and they drive every pick on this list: an alpine start (you want to be off the summit by noon, before afternoon thunderstorms build), real altitude (14,000 feet is roughly half the oxygen of sea level), and exposure above treeline (no shelter from wind, sun, or lightning for the last few miles). Pack for those three and you’ve packed for a 14er.
